Girls Just Wanna Have Fun… Alone, in a New Country

"The most freeing thing I ever did was book a ticket, show up alone, and realize I was capable of more than I thought."

Why Every Woman Should Embark on a Solo Trip

Solo traveling as a woman is an empowering experience that brings freedom, confidence, and personal growth. If you’ve been thinking about booking that solo adventure but need a little push, here’s why it’s absolutely worth it.

"Aren’t You Afraid?" and Other Questions I Get All the Time
I often get so many questions from women about my solo travels:

“Aren’t you afraid to travel alone?” “How do you usually get around?” “How do you find things to do?” “Is it even safe?”

Well, keep reading, because I’m here to answer all of these questions and more!

To give you a little background, I took my first solo trip to Europe in 2014 while I was in college. I remember feeling a mix of emotions: excitement, curiosity, and honestly, a bit of fearlessness. Meanwhile, my mom and sister were not feeling so fearless. Their worry was understandable — it was my first time traveling abroad as an adult, and I was doing it alone. But deep down, I felt like I was born for this.

Traveling had been a dream of mine for as long as I could remember. I even wrote an essay in my 11th grade literature class about wanting to explore the world and become a fashion stylist (still working on that dream, by the way!). So, when the opportunity came to live out my dreams, I didn’t hesitate.

On my first trip, I visited Florence, Italy, Sacile, and Paris, France. And let me tell you — it was magical. I felt like a kid in a toy store, wide eyed and full of wonder. Everything was new, exciting, and just waiting to be explored.

That trip was the spark that ignited my love for solo travel and set me on a path of discovery.

Freedom: No Group Chats, No Compromises, No Problem
One of the greatest joys of solo travel is the freedom it brings. You are not bound by anyone else’s terms, and there is no waiting for the trip to leave the group chat. You are free to explore and view the country exactly how you want to see it.

Freedom to choose your own pace.

Imagine waking up and deciding to spend the day wandering through local markets, sitting in a café for hours, or spontaneously booking a tour without needing to check with anyone else. That level of independence is liberating and deeply satisfying.

How to Become Your Own Hype Woman
Solo travel builds a confidence in you that group trips simply cannot match. When you are relying on yourself and your own instincts, you grow in ways that are hard to replicate in other settings.

You are your own best hype woman.

You learn to navigate new places, communicate across language barriers, and make decisions for yourself. These moments of “survival,” while they may sound extreme, ultimately help you realize your own resilience. You become responsible not only for getting yourself to where you need to be safely but also for ensuring that you enjoy the journey. That kind of independence is incredibly empowering.

Finding Yourself (and Maybe Your Favorite Restaurant)
Traveling alone teaches you a lot about yourself. Without the influence of anyone else’s opinions or feelings, your focus naturally shifts inward. Solitude in an unfamiliar place has a way of bringing clarity.

The clarity that comes from solitude.

You begin to notice your own preferences, strengths, and even fears. What do you truly enjoy? What do you want to avoid? Who are you when no one else is shaping your experience? These questions naturally arise, and the answers are invaluable in helping you grow.

Also, fun fact: wandering through a city solo is an excellent way to discover your favorite hidden gems — whether it’s a cozy bakery or a dope local bar you stumbled across by accident.

Why Being Alone Makes You Popular (But Stay Smart)
Another unique aspect of solo travel is the connections you make along the way — which has been my favorite part of traveling alone. In my experience, solo travel opens up more opportunities to meet new people than traveling with a group ever could.

Unexpected friendships, unforgettable moments.

Locals often find solo travelers approachable, especially when they can tell you’re from another country. That natural curiosity can spark engaging conversations, cultural exchanges, and even lifelong friendships. I’m so happy to say this has been my experience time and time again.

However, while meeting new people is exciting and rewarding, it’s important to stay cautious and mindful of your safety. Trust your instincts, and always make sure you’re in a safe environment when striking up conversations or forming connections.

Some of the most memorable moments from my solo trips have come from these interactions. Whether it’s a warm conversation with a random person at a bar or a shared laugh with a fellow traveler, the people you meet as a solo adventurer often leave lasting impressions.

Ready to Book the Ticket (and Freak Out Later)?
So, you’re feeling inspired and ready to tackle solo travel? Amazing! But you might be wondering, “Where do I even start? Do I just pack a bag and hope for the best?”

Actually yes… kind of. But not exactly.

In my next post, I’ll spill all the tea on how to plan your first solo trip without losing your passport, your mind, or your dignity. From picking the perfect destination to staying safe and making the most of your adventure, I’ve got you covered.

Before You Go…
Take a moment and ask yourself:

What’s one place you’ve always dreamed of seeing? What’s stopping you?
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing to start.

Stay tuned. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!
